6 Months of Exclusively Supercharging My Cybertruck: The Real Savings Breakdown
Hey everyone, DennisCW here! I've had my Tesla Cybertruck for a little over 6 months now (bought it back in July, and we're closing in on March), and I've charged it exclusively at Superchargers for 99% of the time. No home charging, just pure Supercharger life. Today, I'm breaking down the exact metrics, the real savings (retail value vs. home charging), the time cost, and whether it's worth chasing free Supercharging on your next Cybertruck purchase. Let's dive in!
Quick Ownership Recap
This is actually my second Cybertruck—the first was a Foundation Series, but this one's a steal: free lifetime Supercharging + 0% financing. We've racked up nearly 15,000 miles already, including plenty of road trips. And yes, we've supercharged it 100% of the time. Here's the data straight from the app:
- Total energy added: 11,938 kWh
- Supercharger energy: 11,580 kWh (97% of total)
- App-estimated 'gas savings': $6,242 (Take this with a grain of salt—it's a rough equivalent.)
App screenshot showing the numbers—nearly 12,000 kWh!
The Real Dollar Savings: Retail vs. Home Charging
So, is free Supercharging actually saving money? Let's do the math.
Retail Supercharger Value
Right now at this Supercharger, the rate is 48¢ per kWh. For 11,580 kWh:
11,580 kWh × $0.48 = $5,558
Over 7 months, that's **$795 per month** in free electricity at retail rates. Not bad!
True Savings: Vs. Home Charging
But the real comparison is home rates. In California, my average is about 30¢ per kWh:
11,580 kWh × $0.30 = $3,474
~$496 per month saved compared to plugging in at home. This is real money—I'd have to pay for those electrons either way, and with our high mileage, it adds up fast.
| Metric | Total | Per Month (~7 months) |
|---|---|---|
| Retail Supercharger Value | $5,558 | $795 |
| Home Charging Cost | $3,474 | $496 |
| Net Savings vs. Home | $3,474 | $496 |
The Hidden Cost: Time at the Supercharger
Savings aren't everything—time matters. We've hit Superchargers 1-2 times a week, spending 1-2 hours each visit. That's real time:
- Driving to the station (15+ minutes if it's not nearby?)
- Waiting for the charge
- No amenities? Wasted time.
Pro Tip: Location is key! In California, Superchargers are everywhere—near home, work, gyms, restaurants. It's been seamless for road trips. But if you have to detour to a barren station? Not worth it.
Long-Term Thoughts: 50k, 100k, 150k Miles?
We've got 15k miles down, but what about high mileage? Battery degradation? Supercharger availability? Too early to tell, but the big battery makes free Supercharging shine—fewer stops, more range.
Should You Buy a Cybertruck with Free Supercharging?
100% yes if you:
- Drive a ton (like us)
- Live near Superchargers
- Do road trips
It's a massive value prop, especially with the Foundation perks. Skip it only if home charging is free/cheap and convenient.
