Cybertruck Real-World Range Test: LA to San Diego Road Trip
Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're considering pulling the trigger on a Tesla Cybertruck, one of the biggest questions on your mind is probably: Does it have enough range for real-world driving? Today, I'm taking you along for a full day in the life of my Cybertruck as we cruise from Los Angeles down to San Diego and back. Spoiler: We put the battery through its paces, hit a Supercharger, and crunched the numbers. Let's dive in!
The Setup: Starting Smart with Free Supercharging
The trip is about 2-2.5 hours each way—roughly 120-130 miles to San Diego. I started with 76% battery instead of a full 100%. Why? Laziness aside (guilty!), this Cybertruck came with free Supercharging, so I wanted to maximize that perk rather than top off at home.
Tesla's navigation UI is a game-changer here. I plugged in our destination and the next Supercharger, and it projected we'd arrive with 16% at a beastly 325 kW station. Perfect planning!
Tesla's trip planner in action—arriving with plenty of buffer.
Early Math: What's the Real-World Range?
Just 14 miles in, we'd already sipped 5% of the battery. Quick math time:
- 5% = 14 miles
- Full battery (100%) ≈ 280 miles (100 / 5 × 14)
But let's be real—no one charges to 100% daily. Best practice is 80% charge and arrive at your Supercharger with 10%, giving you 70% usable battery.
- 70% usable ≈ 196 miles (70 / 5 × 14)
These are highway numbers with a loaded truck, AC cranked, and real-world conditions. Solid for most daily drives!
Hitting the Road: 15 Minutes In
After 15 minutes, battery at 72%, projected range showing 219 miles. We're hauling wheels on board, so efficiency is taking a hit—but that's real life.
Arrival in San Diego: Mission Accomplished
We rolled into the El Cajon area with 9-10% battery left after 129 miles from our 76% start. That's 66% battery used!
- 129 miles on 66% ≈ 195 miles per full usable battery (scaling to 100%).
- If pushing 0-100%, you're looking at 260-280 miles total range.
Time to juice up at a 250 kW Supercharger (29 miles left—cutting it close but safe). We'll charge as much as needed and head back to LA.
9% left—time for some free electrons!
Does the Cybertruck Have Enough Range?
Short answer: Yes, for most people.
- Daily commutes? No sweat.
- Road trips like this? One quick Supercharger stop, and you're golden—especially with free charging.
- Pro tip: Plan ahead with Tesla's UI, and you'll rarely stress.
This 5-hour round trip shows the Cybertruck shines in practicality. No range anxiety here!
