Easy DIY Roof Rack Install on My Newly Matte-Wrapped Tesla Model Y
Hey everyone, DennisCW here! We just had our Tesla Model Y PPF wrapped in a stunning matte 3M Stealth finish by the awesome team at OC10 Solutions. It looks fantastic, but they had to remove the roof racks for the job and were a bit unsure about reinstalling them. No worries—we've got this! Today, I'm walking you through installing affordable, OEM-looking roof racks from Han Show. These are one of the cheapest options that still look premium, and I'll show you just how easy the DIY install is. If I can do it, you definitely can.
Links to the roof rack kit and promo code Dennis for savings are in the description below (or check my video for full details). Let's dive in!
Why These Roof Racks?
- Affordable: Save half the cost compared to OEM.
- OEM Look: Matte finish matches our new wrap perfectly.
- Utility: Great for bikes, kayaks, or cargo—perfect for adventures.
- DIY-Friendly: No special tools needed; 30-minute job.
I've done both OEM (with driveway install service) and this one. OEM is convenient, but this gives a unique look to your Model Y Performance (or any Model Y). Pros and cons depend on your vibe!
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Here's everything you need: four corner clips, rubber protectors, crossbars, nuts, and caps. Super straightforward.
1. Prep the Clips
- Insert the metal clip into the rubber protector first. This prevents scratches on your paint (or wrap!).
- The rubbers are labeled for front/rear and left/right—easy peasy.
2. Locate the Roof Slots
- Climb onto the roof (carefully!).
- Look for the arrow with two lines on the roof edge—these are your mounting points.
- Slide the clip + rubber into the slot. It should feel snug and secure.
3. Install All Four Corners
- Repeat for all four spots. They'll sit flush and protected.
4. Mount the Crossbars
- Align the first crossbar (shorter one is usually the rear).
- Position over the clips.
- Hand-tighten the nuts—don't overtighten! Finger-tight plus a quarter turn max to avoid cracking the glass roof (same rule as OEM).
5. Finish with Caps
- Snap on the plastic caps for that clean, finished look.
Boom! Done. Your Model Y now has a sleek, functional roof rack that elevates the matte aesthetic.
