Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you've just taken delivery of your shiny new Tesla or you're about to, you might be staring at the screen thinking, "What the heck? I'm on software version 13, when do I get version 14?" This is one of the most common questions I get, and I recently spotted a Reddit thread that perfectly captures it. Let's break it down so you know exactly what to expect.
One owner shared their experience: They picked up a 2026 Model Y Premium on February 28th and received their first update to version 14 with Full Self-Driving (FSD) on March 9th. That's about 1.5 weeks—faster than many expected based on past experiences!
My own story lines up perfectly. When we took delivery of our Model Y Performance in December, it also took around a week and a half to get version 14. From what I've seen across the community, 2-3 weeks is the typical wait time for that initial update.
With millions of Teslas on the road, new deliveries aren't always prioritized at the top of the update queue. You might wonder why Tesla service centers don't just push the latest version during handover—great point! But it seems like it's not part of their standard checklist. Updates roll out over-the-air (OTA) in waves, so patience is key.
While you wait, here are a couple of quick tricks to nudge things along:
These won't magically summon the update, but they can help refresh the connection.
Seeing an "older" version like 13 isn't a red flag. It's normal for new Teslas! In fact, take this as an opportunity to test out FSD on version 13 and appreciate how much better version 14 is once it arrives. Your Tesla is still incredible right out of the gate.
Speaking of new Teslas, if you're picking one up soon (Model 3, Y, S, X, or even Cybertruck), protect that interior from day one. My favorite all-weather floor mats are from 3W—they're top-notch for keeping things clean.
