How Much Would You Actually Pay for a Tesla Cybercab? My Honest Take
Tesla's Cybercab is one of the most anticipated vehicles on the horizon, slated for production potentially in Q1 or Q2 next year. But here's the big question: how much would you actually pay for one? Especially if you plan to add it to your own robo-taxi fleet or use it for unsupervised rides.
I recently saw a poll from David (who famously drove 12,000 miles across the country using 100% Full Self-Driving), asking: "What's the most you'd pay for a new Tesla Cybercab?" I chimed in with $25,000 as my max. Why? Anything pushing $30,000–$35,000 enters Model Y territory, and at that point, I'd rather go for a full-sized SUV.
Tesla's Pricing Strategy: Hype vs. Reality
Don't be surprised if Tesla launches it at around $40,000 amid massive hype and pandemonium. That's classic Tesla. However, I suspect it won't be available for individual purchase right away. Instead, they'll prioritize their own robo-taxi fleet, scaling up in cities like Austin and San Jose first.
Once it's out, though, ownership comes with caveats. Even if you buy one, expect a monthly subscription for full unsupervised operation and robo-taxi features. Tesla's already shifting toward FSD subscriptions, and this will likely include remote monitoring—similar to what they're doing with current robo-taxis in Texas.
My Predicted FSD Tiers for Cybercab
Here's my bold prediction on pricing tiers:
- Unsupervised FSD: $199/month (basic autonomy for personal use).
- Unsupervised + Robo-Taxi Management: $499/month (for business use, picking up passengers, with Tesla taking their cut).
These could even bundle Tesla Insurance, which might be mandatory. Traditional insurers may struggle with policies for driverless vehicles hauling strangers—how do you cover that?
Why $25K is My Sweet Spot
At $25,000, I'd hit buy instantly. It's affordable entry into the robo-taxi revolution. Higher? It gets tough, especially with ongoing subs and insurance hurdles.
