Why You Should Swap Your Model Y Performance to 19-Inch Wheels for a Better Ride and Big Savings
If you've just picked up a Tesla Model Y Performance, you're probably loving that blistering 0-60 acceleration and sharp handling. But here's a mod that can make your daily drive even better: switching to a 19-inch wheel and tire setup. I did this on my previous Model Y Performance, and it's a game-changer. Even folks like Brandon from Tesla are suggesting it could be a factory option!
Recently, Gymkhana Media (Gymed) slapped a sleek set of aftermarket 19-inch wheels on their new Model Y Performance, and it looks killer—especially in black. I'm eyeing Unplugged Performance's RWS wheels myself. But beyond the looks, the practical benefits are huge.
The Problem with Stock 21-Inch Wheels
The Model Y Performance rolls out on staggered 21-inch wheels—meaning the rears are wider than the fronts. Sounds cool for track days, right? Wrong for everyday ownership:
- No tire rotation possible: You can't swap fronts to backs (or vice versa) because of the size difference. Rotate every 5,000-6,000 miles? Forget it.
- Expensive replacements: 21-inch performance tires are pricey and wear out faster.
- Harsh ride: Less sidewall means every pothole and curb feels brutal.
Even if you're smashing 0-60 constantly, rotating tires extends their life dramatically. With a non-staggered 19- or 20-inch setup, you can keep them lasting longer.
Top Benefits of 19-Inch Wheels
Here's why I'm recommending this upgrade:
- Cheaper tires: More affordable and easier to find/replace.
- Better ride comfort: Taller sidewall absorbs bumps, potholes, and curbs like a champ.
- Potential range boost: Lower rolling resistance from smaller wheels.
- Tire rotation: Extend tire life by rotating regularly—saving you money long-term.
- Still performs great: It drives like the Performance model it is.
Winston in the comments nailed it: "Cheaper tires, more sidewall for potholes and curbs, and cheaper to replace vs. 21-inch wheels."
How to Make the Switch Without Breaking the Bank
Don't rush it—burn through your first set of stock tires if you want. Then:
- Sell or trade the stock wheels: I've seen full 21-inch wheel/tire sets go for $2,000-$3,000 on Facebook Marketplace.
- Unplugged Performance trade-in: Swap your OEM wheels (tires optional) for credit toward their wheels.
- Aftermarket options: Go for 19-inch sets from Unplugged, Induction, or others. I traded for 20-inch Induction wheels on my old Model Y and threw in some cash—best decision for sustainability and rotations.

Final Thoughts
OEM 21s look stunning, but practicality wins. More comfort, savings, and peace of mind? Sign me up. If I bought another Performance today, 19-inch wheels would be mod #1.
