Hands-On with the Rivian R2: Colors, Features, and Driving Impressions vs. R1S & Model Y
Hey everyone, DennisCW here! I recently got up close and personal with the Rivian R2 at an event, and it was packed with cool details. From stunning color options to thoughtful interior features and smooth driving dynamics, this compact SUV is shaping up to be a game-changer. We compared it head-to-head with the R1S and even a new Model Y. Let's dive in!
Stunning Color Options
Rivian had five R2s on display, showcasing their vibrant palette:
- Laguna Seca (a bold orange-ish hue) – fresh and eye-catching.
- Black – sleek but a bit understated.
- Gray – classic and versatile.
- Launch Green – gorgeous, especially matching the event vibe.
- Blue and White – both sharp, with the white one being super accessible for sits.
Imagine these beauties lined up!
Some were locked (prototypes?), but the auto-presenting door handles were slick – they pop out halfway for easy access.
Exterior and Entry Features
- Cameras everywhere: One on the pillar, another low, plus the front-facing one. Full visibility for off-roading.
- Integrated wiper: Hidden in the hood line – clean and modern.
- Rear window rolls down: Perfect for that viral dog ad Rivian loves.
- Massive frunk: Spacious with an exit button (though some were locked for safety).
- Manual charge port: Tesla NACS compatible, so Superchargers are a go. Simple indicator light for charging status.
Interior Highlights
Stepping inside felt premium:
- Seats: Supportive headrests that don't poke awkwardly like some rivals.
- MagSafe wireless charger: Sticks perfectly – no sliding around!
- Glovebox: Lockable via screen.
- Rear space: Surprisingly roomy legroom, massive glass roof, and a cool glass pass-through between front and rear (with buttons to control it).
- Storage galore: Hidden spots under the pass-through and elsewhere – Rivian nailed the details with smooth, high-quality touches.
- No rear screen: Smart for off-roading; avoids breakage. Instead, practical hooks for gear or dry cleaning bags.

The Yoke and Controls: Next-Level Intuitive
The steering yoke is a standout:
- Multi-function knob: Scroll for volume/temp, push/pull, tilt left/right for precise AC control. Feels natural – way better than button-mashing.
- Haptic feedback: Subtle resistance prevents over-adjusting.
- 15" screen: Buttery smooth, even on pre-production developer build. Maps load quick, fluidity beats the R1S/R1T.
Driving Impressions: Smoother Than R1S, Better Than Model Y?
"How does it drive compared to the R1S?" Different – in a great way.
- Compact and agile: Smaller, lower, more predictable.
- Air suspension: Unique feel – smoother ride, absorbs bumps differently without the R1S's body-on-frame jarring (especially in firm/low mode).
- Lighter weight: Shaves thousands of pounds for nimble handling.
- Vs. new Model Y: Smoother, more intuitive, elevated SUV stance. You feel in command, responsive to road inputs.
"One of the best cars I've ever driven."

Final Thoughts
The R2 builds on Rivian's rugged DNA but in a more accessible, refined package. Off-road ready yet daily-driver smooth. Can't wait for production – which color are you eyeing? Drop a comment below, and subscribe for more EV deep dives!
