Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're in the market for a mid-size EV SUV, the Rivian R2 and Tesla Model Y are two top contenders in a similar price range. But while they overlap in category, they're built for very different vibes. In this post, I'll break down the key differences based on my latest analysis and help you decide which one is right for you.
The Rivian R2 stands out as a true SUV. With its higher ride height, it feels more like a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4—perfect for off-road adventures or just that commanding view from the driver's seat. Our Model Y Performance is awesome (don't get me wrong—we love it), but it's lower to the ground, more like a lifted hatchback than a rugged SUV.
Rivian offers a couple of interior options (including a coastal gray one), but the Model Y edges it out with better space utilization. The Model Y's rear window lowers, making loading bulky items a breeze—especially since its boxier shape maximizes cargo room. Both are 5-seaters, so no big upgrade there, but the R2's design feels more premium for everyday hauling.
If Full Self-Driving (FSD) is your jam, Tesla Model Y wins hands down. Rivian's Driver+ (formerly Autonomy Plus) isn't quite there yet, though it might catch up in a couple years. If you're used to Tesla's FSD, sticking with the Y makes sense for hands-free highway cruising.
Charging speeds should be similar with the R2's 400V architecture—potentially even better than the Model Y. Road trippers, take note: Rivian might pull ahead here.
Pricing is TBD for the R2's 2026 launch. By then, Model Y could see more discounts. Stay tuned!
Here's the simple breakdown:
| Feature/User Type | Rivian R2 | Tesla Model Y | |-------------------------|------------------------------------|-----------------------------------| | Loves Driving | ✅ Adventure explorer | ❌ City commuter | | FSD/Autonomy Fan | ❌ Not ready yet | ✅ Best in class | | Outdoors/Off-Road | ✅ True SUV height | ❌ Needs mods (like our Unplugged lift kit)| | City Dweller | ❌ Overkill | ✅ Efficient urban hauler |
Bottom line: Go R2 if you crave the drive and outdoor life. Pick Model Y if you'd rather Netflix while FSD handles the wheel.
We've modded our previous Model Y with an Unplugged Performance lift kit for better clearance over curbs and rocks—it transformed it! But the R2 nails that adventure vibe out of the box.

Pro Tip: If you're grabbing a Model Y, check out Jowua accessories. My fave is their foam mount for FSD—use promo code Dennis for savings, free shipping over a certain amount, and free returns. Link in the description!
