Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're a Tesla owner or enthusiast like me, you've probably gotten excited about the latest buzz: Tesla may soon add Apple Wallet car key support. I came across this intriguing post (shoutout to Sorry for sharing it), and it had me digging deeper. At first, I was a bit confused about what it really meant, but once I broke it down, I realized this could be a game-changer for how we interact with our Teslas.
Right now, unlocking your Tesla with your iPhone typically requires the Tesla app to be running in the background via Bluetooth. It's reliable, but it can drain battery or feel a tad clunky if you're juggling apps.
With Apple Wallet integration, your iPhone (or Apple Watch) could act as a secure key card or proximity key—without the app even running. Here's the quote from the post that sums it up perfectly:
"This functionality allows a phone to act as a secure key card or proximity key without the Tesla app running in the background. It also enables features like tap to unlock and deeper system-level integration."
Imagine just tapping your phone to the door handle or walking up like magic. No fumbling for the app, no Bluetooth hiccups if you're low on data. It's all handled at a system level for that ultra-smooth experience.
I wonder if other OEMs like Rivian already do something similar? Rivian has some slick phone key features, but Tesla pulling this off would put them right at the forefront.
This is just another step in Tesla making ownership feel futuristic and effortless. Can't wait to test it out if/when it rolls out in a software update!
