Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're a Tesla owner with a Hardware 3 (HW3) vehicle—like those Model 3s, Model Ys, S's, and X's from 2019 to 2023—you've probably been buzzing about Elon's latest comments on Full Self-Driving (FSD) discounts. He teased this during the recent earnings call, and speculation is running wild. Are you keeping your car or eyeing a shiny new one? Let's break it down, explore the costs, and share my predictions on how this might play out.
Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla is planning discounts for FSD owners, particularly those stuck on HW3. Why? Because HW3 might not cut it for the latest FSD versions (think beyond v14). Tesla promised FSD capability when many of you bought in at sky-high prices—$8,000, $10,000, $12,000, or even $15,000 back in the day when Model Ys were pushing $72,000.
But upgrading HW3 to HW4? It's not straightforward. Elon mentioned opening service centers nationwide, but is that feasible? Let's look at the numbers.
Speculation from channels like Grok pegs the HW3-to-HW4 upgrade at $1,400 to $2,800 per vehicle. Add in new camera suites, labor, and building out service shops, and you're looking at $4,000 to $5,000 per car. That's a massive expense for Tesla, especially with hundreds of thousands of HW3 vehicles out there.
This explains why they offered free FSD transfers recently—it's cheaper to get you into a new HW4-equipped Tesla than retrofit yours. But what if you love your current ride?
Here's where it gets interesting. Tesla could offer a straight discount off a new vehicle based on your FSD purchase:
Sounds great, right? Catch-22 alert: You'd still need to subscribe to FSD on the new car (no transfer). Not ideal if you're dropping big bucks again.
Revive FSD Transfers for HW3 Only: Tie it to a trade-in. Sell your old Tesla, transfer FSD to the new one. Win-win—Tesla gets a new sale, you keep FSD.
Lifetime FSD Subscription on New Buys: For HW3 owners upgrading, throw in lifetime FSD. This boosts Tesla's subscription metrics (hello, Elon's comp plan!) without stranding you.
Tesla's also teasing a HW3-optimized FSD v14 light—features like unpark-to-drive. It'll get some love, but don't expect full parity with HW4. Future updates? Probably HW4-exclusive. (P.S. HW5 and HW6 are for Optimus robots, not cars—HW4 is the vehicle endgame... for now.)
EV trade-in values are high right now. Check out Plug (link in description)—they're buying Teslas nationwide with offers $3,000–$6,000 above competitors. Get a quote in 15 minutes, cash in 2 days. Perfect if you're eyeing that upgrade!
New Tesla? It comes with zero accessories—not even a phone mount! My must-haves from Joah (partner link below):
Plus, wireless game controller, portable air compressor, and an electric scooter for supercharger walks. Use my promo code for savings + free shipping over $120. I use this stuff daily—support the channel!
Tesla's FSD discount could be a game-changer for HW3 owners, but it'll likely push new vehicle sales over retrofits. My bet: Transfers or lifetime subs tied to trade-ins. Stay tuned—I'll update as Elon drops more details.
