Tesla Tightens FSD Transfer Rules: Cybertruck Owners Hit with March 2026 Deadline
Tesla has just updated and clarified their Full Self-Driving (FSD) transfer promotion, and spoiler alert—it's not great news for Cybertruck reservation holders planning to transfer FSD from an older vehicle. If you've been counting on moving your FSD capability to a Cybertruck delivery way out in 2026 or 2027, Tesla is pulling the plug. You must take delivery by March 31, 2026, or the transfer won't be honored.
The Fine Print on the New Policy
Thanks to sharp-eyed community members like Valor, Hans, and others who shared screenshots, we've got the full details. For orders placed before this policy change (including Cybertruck and other models):
- If your delivery window is on or before March 31, 2026, or gets pushed into April due to Tesla delays, your FSD transfer is still good.
- But if your initial delivery window was after March 31, 2026 (hello, most Cybertruck orders), no dice.
The silver lining? Tesla is offering a full refund of your $250 order fee if you can't take delivery by the deadline or your window falls outside it. This is a rare move from Tesla, who have historically treated deposits as non-refundable. It's a nod to customer goodwill amid the backlash.
As always, Tesla's promo page includes the standard disclaimer: they can change terms at any time. Check it out yourself here (link to the official page).
Community Backlash: Bait and Switch?
Tesla fans and bulls alike are venting frustration. Comments like this are popping up:
"Tesla changed the terms of the FSD transfer and is not honoring what was posted when many people (including myself) made their orders. Glad they’re giving $250 back, but this is not right. I don’t like the bait and switch."
Mr. Funman laid out the timeline of Cybertruck woes:
- 10-day delivery deadline
- Removed referral discounts
- Pushed deliveries to 2027
- Now, killed FSD transfers
It's been a rocky road for Cybertruck launches, no doubt.
Cybertruck Still a Steal at $60K?
Despite the drama, I still think the Cybertruck Foundation Series AWD at around $60,000 (plus destination) is a fantastic deal. Remember when a Model Y Long Range Dual Motor AWD cost $64,000 (including fees)? That was back in March-June 2022. Prices fluctuate, but you're getting a futuristic truck for yesterday's SUV money.
I'm keeping my order—Cybertruck hype is real. But if you're having second thoughts, now's your chance to bail with a full deposit refund.
What Should You Do Next?
- Model 3/Y owners: If your window says March/April 2026, you're likely safe.
- Cybertruck hopefuls: Weigh the FSD loss against the truck's value. Refund option makes it low-risk to cancel.
