Tesla Hardware 4 vs. 4.5: Key Differences and How to Check Your Model Y
Hey everyone, DennisCW here! There's a ton of buzz right now about Tesla's Hardware 4.5 (HW4.5) sightings, especially with recent Model Y deliveries. I dove into the details from Grok AI and even checked our own vehicle (spoiler: no HW4.5 yet). In this post, I'll break down the key differences, show you exactly how to inspect your Tesla, and share what it means for Full Self-Driving (FSD).
What Grok AI Says About HW4 vs. HW4.5
According to Grok AI, the big shift with HW4.5 is a three SOC (System on Chip) architecture—that's three chips instead of the previous setup. This is based on hardware cues in part data and is speculated to bring:
- Higher throughput: Up to 50% more processing power in some estimates.
- Fault tolerance: Triple modular redundancy, where the three chips "vote" on decisions for reliability.
- Advanced FSD support: Better equipped for next-gen autonomy development.
Hackers like GreenTheOnly will likely tear one apart soon to confirm the specs, but this looks like a solid upgrade for performance and safety.

How to Check If You Have HW4.5
Shoutout to Brandon for the quick guide! Here's the easy DIY check for your Model Y (or similar Teslas):
- Get on the passenger side floor.
- Gently pull down the carpet near the nozzle—don't yank it!
- Expose the computer sticker. Look for "Hardware 4.5" or "HW45" in the black area.
Our Model Y, picked up on December 22nd, just says "Hardware 4" with no "4.5" marking. Production timing matters—early December builds like ours are HW4, while late December or January deliveries might have the upgrade.
Bonus: Front Camera Module
Check your front camera too:
- HW4 (old): Exposed design (like ours).
- HW4.5 (new): Fully enclosed in black, similar to Cybercab for easier cleaning.
Our sticker (no 4.5) and older front camera module.
The Tesla Update Challenge
This is classic Tesla—constant improvements mean your "new" car might miss the latest hardware. Ours has HW4 and the old camera, so we're sticking with it for now. (Joking aside, if you're trading in, check out Plug in the description—they're offering $3-5K more than competitors for Teslas and EVs. Share your best trade-in stories!)
Must-Have Accessory for New Tesla Owners
No new Tesla is complete without all-weather floor mats. After testing 3D Maxpider, Tesmanian, Amazon options, and more, 3W Liners are my top pick. They're in our Model X, 3, Y, and Cybertruck.
