Tesla HW3 Owners: No Unsupervised FSD, But Upgrades and Trade-Ins Incoming
Hey everyone, Dennis here from DennisCW. If you're a Tesla Hardware 3 (HW3) owner, you've been waiting patiently for unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD). Unfortunately, Elon Musk has confirmed it's not happening. HW3 simply doesn't have the capability—it's got only 1/8th the memory bandwidth of HW4, which is a key bottleneck for advanced AI like unsupervised FSD.
But don't worry, Tesla isn't leaving you high and dry. Here's the plan:
The Good News for HW3 Owners
- Distilled FSD V14 by End of June: Tesla's VP of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, announced a lighter version of FSD V14 tailored for HW3. You'll get most features, including starting drives from park, just like HW4—minus full unsupervised capability.
- Discounted Trade-Ins and Upgrades: For HW3 FSD buyers, Tesla is offering discounted trade-ins toward HW4/AI4 vehicles. Plus, they're planning microfactories in metro areas to upgrade HW3 cars' computers and cameras. Over time, they aim to convert all HW3 vehicles to HW4.
This affects mostly 2019-early 2024 Teslas. Pro tip: If shopping used, skip HW3 models if FSD is a must-have.

Rivian R2 Production Kicks Off
