Why the Tesla Model X is the Worst Tesla (And What to Buy Instead)
Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you've been following my channel, you know I'm all about honest takes on EVs, especially Teslas. Recently, Kyle dropped a quote that I mostly agree with: "The Model X is easily the worst Tesla and it's due for a proper refresh." And honestly? Spot on.
The Problems with the Model X
The Model X is pushing 10 years old now. It's got that iconic "egg" shape, but it's stale. Sure, Tesla has thrown in some tweaks and minor refreshes, but it's still a very expensive car for what you get. Here's why it's falling behind:
- Reliability Nightmares: Over the last 6,000 miles in my experience, we've seen air suspension faults, AC failures, computer crashes, and Full Self-Driving (FSD) glitches.
- Aged EV Tech: Competition is fierce in the luxury SUV segment, and the Model X's tech feels dated.
- Falcon Doors: Love the drama? They open upward like wings, but they come at a high cost in complexity and maintenance.
Lease deals aren't even competitive anymore. At this price, you could snag two Model Ys!
Better Alternatives: Model Y and Beyond
Tesla Model Y – The Smarter Pick
Not much smaller than the X, but half the cost and a truly fantastic car. It's reliable, packed with modern Tesla tech, and perfect for families.
Enter the Competition
I've driven some serious contenders:
- Lucid Gravity: Fresher design, true 7-seater with van-like space. Tesla's ecosystem wins on smoothness (Gravity owners complain about lag), but if you're not deep in Tesla world, Gravity is killer. Prices are dropping – my friend loves his.
- Cadillac Escalade IQ: A proper American SUV with a massive third row. Big, bold, and luxurious.
| Vehicle | Pros | Cons | Price Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model X | Falcon doors, Tesla ecosystem | Stale, unreliable, expensive | $80K+ |
| Model Y | Value, reliable, fun | Smaller | $40K+ |
| Lucid Gravity | Space, fresh tech | Some lag | $80K+ |
| Escalade IQ | Huge SUV, luxury | Thirsty? | $100K+ |
My Recommendation
Stay away from the Model X unless you're all-in on Tesla and need those doors. Go Model Y for Tesla fans, or check out Gravity/Escalade IQ for something newer.
