The Tesla Model Y 6-Seater: Now Live in China
Tesla has officially released the Model Y six-seater (also called the Model Y L) in China, and it's packed with upgrades that make it a serious contender for family haulers and potential robotaxi fleets. This isn't just a stretched version of the standard Model Y—it's got some thoughtful enhancements that could make it more versatile than ever.
Key Features and Specs
- Seating and Layout: Six seats with independent second-row captain's chairs that fold flat, along with a power-folding third row. This creates up to 2,539 liters of storage space when folded.
- Comfort Upgrades: Electric armrests in the second row (they lift and lower automatically—super cool!), additional vents on the B- and C-pillars for better airflow (perfect for kids or pets), heated and ventilated seats, and adjustable front seat headrests with thigh and lumbar support.
- Performance: All-wheel drive, 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, and a CLTC range of 751 km (though EPA estimates will differ for the US).
- Tech and Design: A larger 16-inch central touchscreen (up from 15.4 inches), 19-inch aero-efficient wheels, HEPA filter, acoustic glass, updated suspension with variable damping for a smoother ride, and a panoramic glass roof.
- Other Perks: Black headliner, more plush stitching on seats, and even a rear screen for the second row.
From the photos and videos circulating on Chinese social media, this thing looks premium—like a mini Model X. The second row folds completely flat, and the third row seems more usable than the old seven-seater Model Y, though it's still tight for adults (great for kids, though!). I've seen clips of people camping in the back with mattresses, and there's even a dog mode setup that looks adorable.
Pricing in China and US Speculation
In China, the Model Y L starts at around 339,000 yuan (about $47,000 USD after conversion), which is pricier than the all-wheel drive version at 313,500 yuan ($43,890 USD). That's a $3,000–$4,000 premium, but with the added space and features, it feels worth it. For the US, don't expect exact pricing yet—I'm guessing it'll land around $50,000, especially post the $7,500 federal tax credit expiration on September 30th.
Will this cannibalize Model X sales? Absolutely. The Model X has air suspension and falcon doors, but the Model Y L is more affordable, spacious, and practical for many. If Tesla optimizes the third row comfort, it could be a game-changer. I'm excited for a potential US launch—likely after Q3, maybe in Q4, following Tesla's pattern of China-first releases.

Does This Impact the Model X?
Short answer: Yes. The Model Y L offers similar utility at a lower price point. Why splurge on the X unless you need the extra luxury? It's almost like Tesla is positioning this as a "Model X killer." What do you think—would you choose the Y L over an X? Drop your thoughts in the comments!

We've got fresh footage of the Model Y Performance being pushed to its limits on the Nürburgring track. It looks agile, with great handling and stability. This seems like a standalone model, not combined with the L version. Expect a US release in Q4—fingers crossed for under $60,000.

Big news for San Joaquin Valley residents: A new $2,000 rebate on any new Tesla (Model 3, Y, S, X, or Cybertruck) with no income limits! It stacks with the federal credit and is first-come, first-served (only $3 million funded). Apply ASAP if you're eligible—link in my video description.
