Tesla Model Y Juniper Suspension: Horrendous or Just Different? My Honest Take
Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you've been scrolling through Reddit lately, you might have stumbled upon a post that's got Tesla owners buzzing: "My Model Y Juniper suspension is horrendous." The poster, Mikey, describes feeling every single bump, crack, and rock at low speeds, with their head shaking like crazy. Even speed bumps feel like an earthquake, no matter how slowly they go.
"I heard that the Model Y suspension has never been good. And actually, this Model Y got an upgrade and people were happy. This is my first Tesla Model Y, and my god, this suspension is bad."
They're even considering aftermarket suspensions. Oof—strong words! But let's unpack this. Is the Model Y's ride really that bad, or is it all about expectations?
My Experience with Tesla Suspensions
I've driven plenty of Teslas, including both the old and new Model Y Juniper. Here's the TL;DR:
- Coming from another EV? It'll feel about the same, if not better. Electric vehicles in general have a firmer ride.
- From a luxury ICE car (BMW, Audi, Mercedes)? Yeah, you'll notice it. The heavy battery pack and low center of gravity make EVs harsher than gas-powered luxury rides.
- From a Honda or Toyota? No big difference—similar comfort levels.
The Reddit poster? They drive a Lincoln, which is top-tier for plush suspension comfort. Coming from that to a Model Y is like trading a cloud for a sports car. Context is everything!
Don't get me wrong—the current Model Y Juniper is a huge improvement over the older version. I've tested both, and it's noticeably better. But it's not 'luxury sedan' soft. Tesla prioritizes handling and efficiency over pillow-like comfort. If you're buying one, keep this in mind—it's sporty, not sedative.
Why Do EVs Feel Harsher?
It's physics:
- Battery weight: Low and heavy, stiffens the ride.
- No engine mass up front: Changes weight distribution.
- Tire and wheel setup: Often larger wheels mean less sidewall cushioning.
This isn't unique to Tesla—most EVs (luxury or not) share this trait compared to ICE vehicles.
Upgrading Your Tesla's Interior Comfort
Suspension gripe aside, one easy way to add that premium feel? Accessories! My go-to is Jowua (that's J-O-W-U-A). Their center consoles, phone mounts, and more fill the gaps Tesla leaves out.
I use their phone mount 100% of the time with Full Self-Driving. Rock solid!
