Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you've been following my Tesla content, you've probably seen the buzz about the Model Y Performance not living up to its name when it comes to supercharging speeds. Reports are flooding in that charging rates are underwhelming, and I've got the inside scoop from a reliable Tesla source to explain why.
The limiting factor? The battery cells. The Model Y Performance uses fresh 2170 cells from Panasonic's new Kansas production facility, nicknamed 21V. Since these are brand-new cells, Tesla is playing it safe with a conservative charging curve. No ripping to 250 kW just yet!
On top of that, Panasonic is dealing with their own production hell at the plant. This is one big reason why Performance Model Y deliveries got delayed across America. Makes sense – better safe than sorry with a new battery in a high-performance beast.
This isn't new for Tesla. Think back to the Cybertruck launch – its charging curve was rough at first but improved dramatically via software updates. I'd rather Tesla err on the side of caution than risk battery issues. Safety first!
You've all seen those flashy videos of other EVs hitting 500 kW and charging 0-100% in record time. Meanwhile, Tesla's still lagging here. It's frustrating, but understanding the 'why' helps. Tesla and Panasonic are pushing hard on the 21V (and upcoming 21VB) to maximize IRA tax credits and domestic manufacturing perks. Win-win for everyone.
Earlier this year, I mentioned Tesla and Panasonic working on higher-density, faster-charging 2170 cells called 21VC. Stay tuned – we'll likely see updates later this year, and I'll be doing side-by-side comparisons once our Model Y Performance hits a Supercharger.
I haven't supercharged ours yet, but that's changing soon after our next drive. Have you picked up a new Model Y Performance? How's the charging treating you? Drop your experiences in the comments below!
One thing I love doing is keeping our Tesla Model Y spotless. That's why we use 3W all-weather floor mats in all our Teslas. Perfect fit, lifetime warranty, and unbeatable protection.
