Tesla Model Y Performance: Real-World Efficiency Test After 200 Miles (No Wheel Caps!)
Hey everyone, DennisCW here! The Tesla Model Y Performance just launched, and while there haven't been official range tests yet, I've already put over 200 miles on mine without the wheel caps (those aero covers that help efficiency). Spoiler: it's the most inefficient Tesla out there right now—especially with the 21" wheels for that sporty look. But let's dive into the real numbers and see what this means for you.
If you're eyeing the Model Y Performance, efficiency probably isn't your top priority. You're here for the blistering acceleration, plush comfort, and track-ready performance. Speaking of which, I'm taking this beast to Tesla Corsa—a Tesla enthusiasts' track day on February 28th. Check the link below and use promo code DENNIS to save some cash!
The Raw Efficiency Numbers
Since my last full charge:
- Distance driven: 178+ miles
- Energy used: 46 kWh
- Efficiency: 258.6 Wh/mi
What does that mean? Lower Wh/mi is better (more efficient). My driving style? A mix of Chill and Insane modes, but I've been easy on the throttle to preserve the tires.

Comparisons and Estimated Range
For context:
- Standard Model Y (Premium): 210-220 Wh/mi with a ~70 kWh battery.
- Model Y Performance: Guessed at 80-81 kWh battery (from forums).
With my no-caps, 21" wheel setup at 258.6 Wh/mi, full range estimate: 310-315 miles (100% to 0%). But real-world? Tesla owners rarely drain to zero—we top up at home or Superchargers. Using 80% of the battery, expect solid daily usability.
Range calculator in the description below!
Total ownership stats so far:
- 545 miles driven
- Average efficiency: 264 Wh/mi
How It Stacks Up
| Vehicle | Avg Efficiency (Wh/mi) |
|---|---|
| Model Y Premium | 210-220 |
| Model Y Performance | 258-264 |
| Cybertruck | 450-550 |
The Performance model is 10-20% less efficient than the standard Y, but it's way better than my Cybertruck. And honestly? With a home charger, range anxiety is a non-issue. Just plug in when you get home.
Tips to Maximize Range
Want better efficiency?
- Drive slower—simple physics.
- Use Chill mode for everyday cruising.
- Enable Low Power Mode at home/night to cut phantom drain (I've ditched Sentry since it's parked in my backyard).
What's Next: Track Day at Tesla Corsa!
Efficiency be damned—this thing is built for fun. Can't wait to push it at Tesla Corsa. Join me if you're in! [Link and promo code DENNIS below.]
At the end of the day, the Model Y Performance delivers thrills over MPG equivalents. If performance isn't your jam, stick with the standard model. What do you think—worth the efficiency hit? Drop a comment!
