Tesla Q1 Earnings Recap: Robotaxi Miles Double, Optimus Scales, and FSD Subscriptions Surge
Hey everyone, DennisCW here! Tesla's latest shareholder update was packed with game-changing announcements. While there's plenty of coverage out there on energy storage, vehicle lineup shifts, and more, I wanted to break down the highlights that really stood out to me. From Robotaxi progress to Optimus ambitions and booming FSD subscriptions, Tesla is accelerating toward its AI and autonomy future. Let's dive in.
Key Highlights from the Earnings Call
Dirty Tesla nailed a quick recap, but here's my take on the biggest takeaways:
- Robotaxi Goes Live Unsupervised: Robotaxi is now operational without supervision, and miles driven have doubled quarter-over-quarter. This is huge for scaling autonomous mobility.
- Cybertruck & Semi Ramp-Up: Production scaling through 2026, with Cybertruck even positioned to replace Model Y fleets in some contexts.
- Optimus Production Leap: From 1 million to 10 million units per year. Tesla's humanoid robot is gearing up for massive deployment.
- AI Infrastructure Boom: Building a massive AI fab with AI 5 chips and Dojo 3. They've got a 100K+ GPU training cluster powering it all.
- FSD Improvements: Full Self-Driving latency down 20% – no wonder it's feeling smoother on the roads!
FSD Subscriptions Explode
Full Self-Driving subscriptions are up 51% year-over-year, with 180,000 new subscribers in Q1 alone. This makes total sense now that FSD is subscription-only ($99/month vs. $8,000 upfront). More people are realizing the value – especially with Tesla Insurance offsetting costs. Some owners are saving $100-200/month by using 100% FSD.
"We exited quarter one with the largest backlog of auto orders in our history." – Tesla CFO
That backlog is massive, though I'd love a breakdown: How much is the $59K Cybertruck juicing it versus Model 3/Y? Either way, demand is through the roof.
Upcoming FSD v15 and the Pivot to AI
Elon confirmed FSD version 15 drops later this year or early next, running on AI4 hardware. If you're eyeing a Model 3 or Y right now, rest assured it'll handle v15. Unsupervised? We don't know yet, but the trajectory points to Robotaxi readiness.
Tesla isn't just a car company anymore. The pivot to Optimus, AI, and Robotaxis is crystal clear. Sales incentives took a backseat – it's all about autonomy now.
Other notables:
- Superchargers up 19%
- Battery supply still a bottleneck, but vertical integration is accelerating
- Megapack deployments + solar income up 136%
- $44.7 billion cash war chest for the long game
