Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're a Tesla fan like me, you've probably heard the rumors swirling around the future of the Model S. Is it really going out of production? Well, I recently came across a fascinating take from Jason Kaminski, who managed to sit down with Tesla's top brass—including Lars Moravy (VP of Vehicle Engineering) and other key designers. He even got hands-on with a rare Model S Signature edition. What he uncovered is a game-changer, and I'm breaking it down for you today.
According to Jason's interview (reading between the lines, as execs have to be careful), the cost to re-engineer the Model S to meet upcoming safety and crash regulations is simply too high. It would cost more to retrofit the current platform than to start fresh with a new design.
Here's the direct quote that hit me hard:
"The reason Model S is going out of production is... the cost to re-engineer Model S to continue to comply with all safety and crash regulations would be greater than to start over."
Add to that the harsh reality of the market: the luxury sedan segment is dying. Look at the sales numbers—Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y are dominating with massive volumes, while S and X lag behind. Why pour billions into a shrinking niche when you can supercharge the mass-market winners?
I totally agree—the luxury sedan world is fading fast. Few brands nail it anymore, and Tesla's volume speaks for itself. That said, there are diehard Model S fans out there who will keep the flame alive. Maybe Tesla should pivot to a low-volume, made-to-order model? Custom Plaids built just for you—now that sounds epic.
The Model S is already a beast safety-wise (it's crushed crash tests), so I'm curious what new regs are forcing this. Either way, it's bittersweet. I see those Plaid models ripping around daily, and they still turn heads. Sad to think they might vanish.
While we mourn the Model S, let's pimp out what we've got! One of my favorite ways to level up your Tesla interior is with Jowua accessories. They've got center consoles, organizers, and more. Their top sellers?
Head to the link in the description (or check Jowua's site), use my discount code for savings, free shipping on orders over a certain amount, and free returns. Your Tesla deserves it!
Tesla's bold move makes business sense, but it stings for enthusiasts. What do you think—should they keep the Model S alive in some form? Drop your thoughts in the comments, smash that like button if you're team Model S, and subscribe for more Tesla deep dives. Catch you in the next one!
