Hey everyone, DennisCW here! If you're eagerly waiting for your Rivian R2 like many of us, I've got the latest scoop straight from a Rivian executive interview shared by Out of Spec. This is the most precise timeline yet on manufacturing validation, inventory, employee testing, and customer deliveries. Let's break it down.
According to the exec: "We're in the final obviously stretch of the R2 validation where we had the manufacturing validation builds. Then we're getting into serious production really soon."
This means Rivian is wrapping up those crucial manufacturing validation builds. Next up? Serious production ramps up shortly after.
Before customer hands hit the wheel, Rivian employees will take delivery of R2 vehicles for a few months. Why? To rack up tons of miles and gather real-world feedback on the overall software experience. This internal testing ensures everything is rock-solid before going wider.
Once employee testing wraps, the first lucky customers get their R2s by the end of spring—think late May or early June.
Pro tip: Check your Rivian app or the "upcoming Rivian delivery" email. It explicitly states you won't be notified until June. So, if you've placed your order, brace for a realistic window.
For most R2 reservation holders, deliveries look like Q3 (July-September) or even Q4 (October-December) by year's end. Sorry to temper the hype, but this aligns with the exec's details—no real customer (or even Rivian owner) deliveries until after internal fleets are battle-tested.
Shoutout to Isaiah for this gem: If you're leasing a Rivian R1 through Chase, you can extend your lease up to 6 months on a month-to-month basis. Keep paying your normal rate and bridge the gap until your R2 arrives. Many leasing companies offer this case-by-case for folks waiting on their next EV. Give Chase a call if this fits your situation!
One thing Tesla doesn't throw in? A killer set of all-weather floor mats. After testing 3D Maxpider USA, Tesmanian, Amazon generics, and more, my top pick is 3W Liners. They're in my Model X, Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck.
