Hey everyone, DennisCW here! The Rivian R2 is one of the most anticipated EVs on the horizon, and with production slated for spring 2026, the buzz around its pricing—especially lease payments—is heating up. A recent Reddit post by u/AlphaMonkey caught my eye with some detailed speculation on what the monthly lease could look like. Let's break it down and share why I think the actual numbers might be a bit higher.
AlphaMonkey crunched the numbers assuming an MSRP of around $58,000-$60,000 for a base R2. Here's the TL;DR:
This sounds incredibly reasonable—especially if you're putting down just 1/10th of the MSRP. For a vehicle in this price range, a $600-ish payment at zero down would be a steal!
Don't get me wrong—I'd love to see the R2 launch at these rates. It would be a home run for Rivian, allowing them to crank out deliveries and capture massive demand. But here's why I'm skeptical:
No Need for Heavy Incentives: The R2 has insane pre-launch hype. Rivian doesn't have to slash prices to move units right away.
R1S Comparison: Right now, Rivian's advertised lease for the R1S (a larger, more premium SUV) starts at $899/month—and that's a heavily subsidized promo rate. Undercutting that by $250+ for the smaller R2 might not make strategic sense.
Cannibalization Risk: If the R2 is $620/month, why not just stretch for an R1S at $899? Rivian could price the R2 at $749-$799/month to create clear separation, nudging fence-sitters toward the bigger, arguably better-valued R1S.
Employee deliveries are starting (mostly execs for now), but consumer leases won't hit until launch. Expect Rivian to test the waters with premium pricing first.
Would $620/month make you pull the trigger on an R2? Or are you holding out for an R1S? Drop your thoughts in the comments below—I read them all!
