Rivian R2 Unveiled: Impressive Specs, Pricing Predictions, and Why It's My Most Anticipated EV
The Rivian R2 is finally here—or at least, the teasers are! Rivian has announced that full details, including pricing, options, and more, will drop on March 12th. That's just a month away, and the excitement is building. While we don't have official numbers yet, the early leaks, reviews, and specs are painting a picture of what could be Rivian's breakout hit in the more affordable EV space.
Not Your $45K Starter EV
Don't get your hopes up for a $45,000 Rivian R2 right out of the gate. My guess? It'll launch around $60K–$65K. The R2 sports a cool R2D2-inspired color scheme in the reveals, and it looks bigger than a Tesla Model Y—especially in interior cargo space. It's positioning itself as a more spacious SUV alternative.
Early reviews are glowing. Doug DeMuro from MotorWeek (MKHB) got behind the wheel and called it "quite possibly the best all-around electric vehicle I've ever driven." He scored it a 70, edging out the R1S/R1T and beating the Model Y, Macan EV, and Mach-E.
Standout Specs and Performance
Here's what we've pieced together from reviews and leaks:
- Range: Chris from Out of Spec spotted 258 miles at 83% charge on all-terrain tires, extrapolating to ~310 miles full. Swap to efficiency tires, and we could see 330+ miles. Impressive for its size and boxier shape compared to the aerodynamic Model Y.
- Charging: Peaks at 240 kW (a step up from previous Rivians), with a 10-80% in 30 minutes. The in-car UI shows the charging curve, which ramps down quickly—but still solid. Plus, NACS port for Tesla Supercharger access.
- Acceleration: 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds.
- Battery: Estimated 87 kWh—bigger than the Model Y's Long Range.
- Suspension: Coil springs (no air suspension), but reviewers say it's surprisingly comfortable.
| Spec | Details |
|---|---|
| Range | ~310 miles |
| 0-60 mph | 3.6 seconds |
| Battery | ~87 kWh |
| DC Fast Charge | 10-80% in 30 min |
| Charging Port | NACS |
| Suspension | Coil springs |
Pricing Predictions
Taylor from 'Taylor of EV' nailed some educated guesses:
- Launch Edition: $63,000
- Large Pack AWD: $57,000
- RWD (mid-tier): $52,000
- Base RWD: $45,000 (textile seats, no power outlets)
The base model might not hit until a year post-launch. With $100 deposits already pouring in, many will happily pay the premium to jump from Model Y or similar.
Why I'm Hyped
The R2 feels like Rivian's answer to the mass market without sacrificing adventure-ready vibes. Production starts soon, but test drives might lag. If you're ordering one, hit me up—I'll crash your delivery for a firsthand look!
